EAST BERLIN AND ITS BUILDINGS

Photographies 1945-1990

Fifteen years after the reunification of Germany still no comprehensive publication was published for the building history of the German Democratic Republic. This Catalog would like to make a contribution to prepare the Bauentwicktung in east Berlin photo documentary. Since 1991 extensive photo archives of the Ost-Berliner building administration are in the architecture collection of the Bertinischen Galerie. It succeeded to that only now by generous support of the Getty Foundation -, to arrange archives to take an inventory and to present the results in this book of pictures to the public. Archives represent a singular build-historical document for east Berlin as capital of the GDR any longer not existing. To a large extent for the first time published photographies show becoming east Berlin from the rubble after 1945, the renewal of the urban structures - particularly within the center up to culture, sport and mass housebuilding in partially unknown details. Most Berlin-interested completely again rejected and never realized planning might be, this archives in models and designs deliver. The development and publication of the photo existence would like to request structure to reflected handling the historical city substance and - and a contribution to in the last years increasingly in depth and differentiationness the attractive research over examples concerning town construction and the architectural of the GDR time make.
