East Berlin was the Soviet occupied sector of Berlin during the division of the city in 4 sectors from 1945 to 1990.

The three remaining sectors: French, English and American, made up the western part of the city, called ?West Berlin? or just Berlin (west).

The name East Berlin was common primarily in western Germany. The government of the GDR tended use the name Berlin, Capital of the GDR or simply Berlin.

With the collapse of the GDR and the reunification of Germany both sides of Berlin were reunited.

Today, years later, many visible traces of the former division have vanished.

Only a few remnants of the former border installations still exist and the wall, a world-wide symbol of the German division, has almost completely disappeared.

This website was created to recall the recent history of Berlin, particularly of the eastern part. It is meant for anyone interested and especially for those who only know this topic from stories. It offers the possibility to gain knowledge of the original times and places on the grounds of documents and reports.

The work on this website will always be in progress and thus can not claim to be the fully complete.
