East Berlin was the Soviet occupied sector of Berlin during the division of the city in 4 sectors from 1945 to 1990. From 1949 to 1990 East Berlin was also the Capital of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). In the period from 1961 to 1989 Berlin was divided by a wall, which was built on behalf of the government of the GDR (East Germany).
